  1. I emailed McKenney and Leiper suggesting Carling be renamed Dow's Lake. Carling is a major east-west artery with two stations (Carling and Lincoln Fields); the current name does little to tell people where they are. Dow's Lake is a year-round destination well known by locals and tourists alike. To boot, the area around Dow's Lake and the station has seen and will continue to see major projects, with thousands of condo units, the redevelopment of the Booth Street complex and of course the new Civic Hospital.

  3. I also believe freqency would have been a better investment than per-vehicle capacity. Decreasing to a 8 minutes timetable between train along a double alignment would have provided still more capacity overall and room for expansion. It just seems like a compromise so they don't have to include a widened bridge and tunnel around Carleton station. Line 2 is, and for a while, will remain more of a commuter train than a real "light rail" system to me for as long as they don't increase frequency.   4. I drew this diagram a couple of years ago (before I learned how to make use of proper mapping tools..) Essentially this line would run parallel (or share?) the Trillium Line corridor South of Walkley and eventually cross over using a grade-separated structure to replace the Trillium Line on the airport spur. I drew another (incomplete) one showing the general network as well as how this yellow line could be continued past the downtown to basically be used as another line down the Montreal Rd corridor. The colour of Line 3 is not clear. I've heard brown, gold, olive and mustard over the last few hours between social media and my household. In many cities, lines are identified by colour in conversation (prend la ligne orange et transfert à la ligne bleu pour vous rendre à l'UdeM), but that sort of exchange could be confusing with such an ambiguous colour.   6. I crunched the numbers for the O-Train expansion, Stage 1 to 3. City staff have always been bad at estimating costs, but I'm wondering now if prices have gone way up or if the City is trying to overcompensate by presenting ridiculously high estimates for Barrhaven. These are Confederation only since Trillium is a very different transit line.   7. Yes but my point is currently Stage 2 will bring the train across Orleans as far as Trim, but only to Moodie which is pretty much the outer edge of Kanata... not into Kanata. Once Stage 3 happens, Kanata will have some level of pairity that Orleans would have had for several years. While I am not against a second line into Orleans, I don't see them giving that priority over Montreal Road or Carling Avenue, if not someplace else deemed important, as those seem to be building in traction and interest. Time will tell as they are working on the new Transportation Master Plan, so priorities ma

  11. I remember City staff providing estimates during a meeting a while back. It might have been in February or March 2019. I seem to recall it was under an hour (53 minutes?) between Trim and Moodie, but don't quote me on that. At the time, they also provided estimated travel from each Confederation termini to downtown.   12. I copy pasted my post from SSP and it looks a little wonky. The Stage 2 replay ends at "This is a concern on our type of system where we have low level platforms and it is a short step down to track level." The Stage 2 teams reply included a site plan showing the station configuration. As I understand it, the side platform will only be used during late evenings. During day time hours, the centre platform will be used exclusively. The directions on the site plan are late evening I imagine.

  17. I suspect that if the rest of the line were to be twinned that the single-track tunnel would function quite well. This is what Sacramento does on its main line crossing of a river. And it can seem like that bridge, as would be the case for the tunnel, is in pretty much constant use with trains going both ways in sequence. If the sequencing is properly automated why would it not work? The transit time through the tunnel is a bit more than a minute at best which means that the tunnel could handle at least 15-20 trains per hour in each direction . . .

I have no numbers, but IMHO it would be reasonable to suggest that the frequency could increase CONSIDERABLY, given stations essentially at both ends of the tunnel (Carleton and Dow's Lake). I have to think any restriction would be minimal, especially if you gauntlet track the tunnel, eliminating the failpoint of switches.. FWIW.

  21. I found another map of what Ottawa's Transit offering could be. Like on every proposed map, it has its strengths and weaknesses. But all of them have the immense merit of showing a vision. These illustrations of a potential future must also remind us that people are at the centre of these visions. I really like the three additional Downtown Stations. The response to the site since it was launched has been tremendous and I am very appreciative for everyone's support. If you take the elevators at the Joey's/Simons Rideau Center entrance down and check out the parking levels . . . this is all entirely new construction undertaken at the same time as the tunnel was excavated. I believe it's still possible to find Web references to the knock out wall on the south side of the tunnel to give a second access to the Rideau Center. I haven't determined exactly which level in the Rideau Center parking garage --maybe level 4?--that would link to the tunnel mezzanine but I'd venture to say that the new set of double elevators at this Rideau Center entrance likely were

  27. I also would love to see that potentially second entrance. The layout of Rideau means you are not only back-tracking, but "going around" if you are on one side of the mall, which makes it "annoying" if, let's say, you want to do a quick stop in the mall. We see it with the elevator access next to EBX, it is always busy because it gets you right in the middle and then you can go eitherway. I understand why Rideau's entrances are placed that way, given, but I also see it as a missed opportunity to make it less crammed on the Rideau side of the concourse given its split nature...

  28. This is very interesting. These are details I did not know about Rideau. While it may seem excessive to have two entrances from a shopping centre, there is presidence for this in Toronto at the Eaton Centre. It does in fact have two entrances, not quite at the extremeties but the mall is fairly long and it does help give better access. Rideau is more compact but it would allow better access to the mall and an easier flow through, despite having two entrances link to the same station. At least the elevator entrance provides a second option, one that many many people seem to prefer. I look

  30. Happy to hear you enjoyed the Azur. The air flow is significantly improved over the older generation trains and can be very strong when the train is fairly empty. It is impressive how it works and gets the job done. Of course, the look of the trains themselves, the colour scheme and the finishing touches are a world apart from anything else. The STM definitely got the best train they possibly could.

  31. I don't know if you remember, but there was a time when the rush hour service was to be covered exactly that way: 15+2. But someone from the City, said that "it was alright" and that 13 trains could do the job. Yeah, right. That came right after we were told the system had performed 9 consecutive days of testing, 3 short of the twelve days that had been drilled into our heads as the golden standard to give the final OK. Moreover, the way it was explained was that if there was a glitch, the whole 12 days would be back to square one. I hope these trains will be reliable one day, but I don't hold

  32. Wondering if we should rename this thread O-Train Service Patterns, Frequencies and Travel Times? Cover more ground. Travel time of 53 minutes from Trim to Moodie, if that's the case, is pretty good and competitive with driving, but beyond that, driving becomes the undisputed better option. Imagine someone who lives in Orleans and works in Kanata North (few and far between I'm sure, but I could see a fair amount of coop students making that journey), it will be about an hour from Trim to Eagleson, plus 15 minutes to Kanata North, and that's with a good bus network serving the area, which

  35. I agree that on the 'surface' the best option of the two is underground under Sparks. This would allow connections to both Lyon and Parliament stations. It was stated that the intention would be to have the stations of both lines connect together to allow seemless or indoor transfers between. This would also allow additional entrances to the O-Train from Sparks Street, rather than only being on Queen. There was concern before about Bayview being the main transfer station between both cities but now that the plan is becoming more firm on the location to transfer being in the main downtown

  37. Thank you for sharing the picture. I have added it onto the Montreal station page. If the final station can look this open and clean it will be to me a success from a visual perspective. At the very least a significant improvement over the current overpass / underpass, which is very dingy, dark and deteriorated. Indeed one to follow very closely with all the work involved.

When the decision was made to add the airport link, they should have dropped the plan to double platform (and train) lengths and instead double track the line so that both the Airport and Riverside South could have service direct to Bayview. Quite honestly, that should have been the plan from the get-go; service frequency is always the better option over larger vehicles. That's what attracts riders.

  39. Here's a rendering that was sent to me a few years ago by someone associated with the project. That person is no longer with the project. I did not see it on the page dedicated to Montréal Station. By the way, it looks like Orléans will keep its accent on the "e", but Montréal will lose it. I guess it is consistent with the way those names appear in the city's register of street names.

  40. I agree that the communication needs to vastly improve. A recent media article suggests this will be the case when the line reopens this Monday, but time will tell. I'm sure the technical issues are one thing but the fail in communication is what really drives people nuts and increases anger. You could be on a train that is being held, with no idea when it will resume for example. Should I stay on or use surface transit, only to see it leave moments after getting off... or it may stay an hour. There is a reluctance on providing estimates on service restoration but this is essential and mo

  41. At grade in downtown is most likely the least attractive idea to come from this. We (Ottawa and Ontario) just spent 500,000,000 on a tunnel to get transit off the streets. And Now Gatineau (and apparently more of those nameless "staff" people in Ottawa) thinks this is a good idea. The answer is no. No to 2 separate systems, no to clogging streets with a zillion slow trams during rush hour. No no no. Yes to a zillion other options.

  42. Time for my weekly updates! 1. 8th of june, tarp on the other side of the "track". Workers have laid down these mats composed of old tires to allow access for the excavator. The machine on the right is digging holes to blast the rock to carve out the future station 2. 9th of June, technically not related but right behind Gladstone workers are preparing the 417 bridge replacement. 3. 10th of June, we're blasting!   47. The Bank Street alignment is probably one of the most "logical" north-south alignment as it doesn't overlap too much with existing alignment while serving an actual north-south axis. Generally speaking, agreed "effective" radius for mass-transit is around 600m from station. In this context, I created a map of where potential stations would be versus existing / future Trillium line stations, and there is not that much overlap. The only real overlap between the two lines is Walkley if built as separate stations. Of course it would be a REALLY expensive endeavour, but it is one of

Although the ridership certainly isn't there today to justify the expense of a tunneled line under Bank Street, in the future if/when the central line is built I don't think it would make the Trillium Line entirely obsolete. (Ideally) The Trillium line would still be the main link to Gatineau for anyone from the south, like you mention Carleton will still be a big factor, if the new hospital is built that will also be not, and Carling/Gladstone will be the site of some fairly high density developments.   49. Today at FEDCO, it was announced that 2 additional double-trains may be added to service in January, provided service reliability and issues continue on their trend downwards. Currently Line 1 : Confederation Line operates with 13 double-trains. With each double-train carrying around 600 passengers. Doing some crude math, we can say that the line will increase in capacity by approximately +15.4% 13 double trains = 7,800 15 double trains = 9,000
